3G Switch Off – What does is mean for you?

Modified on Wed, 7 Aug at 1:00 PM

Telecom operators are switching off 3G services so that they can focus on strengthening the newer and more reliable 4G and 5G networks, offering better connectivity to the customers.

This shutdown of the 3G is happening across the world, meaning that if your device doesn’t support 4G or 5G, you may not be able to make calls or use data on your device.

To ensure uninterrupted connectivity for our users, we ask you to upgrade to a 4G/5G compatible SIM card and/or device before January 1, 2024.

How do I get ready for the 3G switch-off?

If you already have a 4G or 5G device, you don’t need to do anything. Please follow the below steps to get ready for the switch off:

  1. See if your mobile phone already supports 4G or 5G. If not, please upgrade your phone to a 4G or 5G compatible device.
  2. Check to ensure that the 4G network is turned on in your mobile phone settings.
  3. Call 339 from your Talk Home SIM to connect with support and see if your SIM is 4G/5G ready. If not, we will send you a replacement for free.

How is the 3G Switch-off Good for Me?

Better Connectivity

Upgrading to 4G/5G network will mean you get to enjoy clearer calls, faster data speeds (up to 1Gbps), better online streaming, and more fluid gaming/surfing.

Battery Usage

Compared to 3G, the 4G & 5G networks are less battery intensive, allowing your smartphone’s battery to last longer.

Great Coverage

Talk Home’s 4G/5G network covers up to 99% of the UK. This means you will get better coverage and faster data speeds.
